1) How to choose the right Membrane Filter for my application ?

To choose the right membrane filter, one should define the compound in the sample and the solvent present and working temperature, based on the above one can check the compatibility chart and available membrane properties to determine the right membrane. Additional Knowledge of dissolved solids and molecular weight can make your selection more precise. PFP can help you identify the right membrane and help you with sizing of filter. Please contact us for sample trials and membrane selections.

2) How long does Filter Last ?

There is no exact life span for filters, their life depends on usability and characteristic of the liquid or air being filtered, a fluid with high volumes of solid particles can choke the filter faster, whereas a relatively clean fluid will use the same filter for a longer time. Filter life can only be defined with experience and fixed working conditions and product. Every filter has a max pressure rating indicating need for change of filter. This pressure rating helps one identify if the filter is choked and it can take no further load.

3) What is the shelf life of a filter ?

Shelf Life of Filter is usually 2 years if stored in clean and ambient temperature, depending upon the filter this can change.

4) Is 0.2 Micron Sterile grade Filter ?

Till 1960 0.45 micron filter were considered sterile grade filters, but in the mid 1960s, Dr Frances Bowman observed a 0.45 micron sterile culture medium was contaminated with small micro-organism. Subsequently the pore size was reduced by half to 0.22 / 0.2 micron and today 0.2 / 0.22 micron is considered sterile grade filters.

5) All Filters looks identical what is the difference ?

All filter cartridges look similar and they are made so to fit standard housings, what differs is the construction of membrane inside the filter. Membrane are the heart of the filters and they can be tested by various method destructive and non destructive to understand their properties.

6) What is integrity Test ?

Article on Integrity Testing and procedure FDA requires integrity testing of all sterile grade filters in pharmaceutical industry. They also have to maintain proper record for such testing. Integrity testing is normally done by Bubble Point Test it is a non destructive test confirming the integrity of the filter. PFP can help you perform integrity testing as third party service provider with all documentation we also provide training and demonstration on the same.

7) What is Forward Flow Rate test ?

Forward Flow test or Diffusion test is also used to understand the integrity of the filters. It is normally used on hydrophobic filter where a constant pressure of air is applied on upstream side of filter saturated with liquid ( water) and the air diffused through it is measure over a period of time. PFP can help you perform Diffusion flow test on your existing filters to understand and determine integrity of the same.

8) How to check Filter Compatibility with chemicals ?

Filter Compatibility can be understood from various published data available. For any specific chemical filtration guide please get in touch with us.

9) What is the difference between hydrophilic and hydrophobic ?

Hydrophobic mean one that repels water, they are normally used in air and gas filtration. PTFE Filter is a good hydrophobic membrane used in air and gas filtration. Hydrophilic means one that attracts water, they are used in filtration of all types of liquids.
